- 1 tsp espresso powder (optional)
- ½ cup chocolate chips (optional)
- ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together black cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Fold in optional ingredients like espresso powder, chocolate chips, or nuts if using.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Frost with cream cheese frosting or chocolate ganache as desired.
Notes
Be sure to use black cocoa powder for the signature deep color and flavor. Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
