Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir until dissolved.
  2. Sprinkle yeast over the mixture and let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  3. Add melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix to combine.
  4. Gradually add flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough, shape into a log, and place in a greased loaf pan.
  8. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Slice and toast the bread until golden brown. Serve with desired toppings.

Notes

Use fresh yeast and whole milk for best results. You can freeze slices for up to 3 months. Try sweet or savory toppings for variety.
