Description

A rich, vibrant twist on classic cinnamon rolls, these Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls are soft, fluffy, and packed with cocoa-cinnamon flavor, topped with luscious cream cheese frosting.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar, sprinkle yeast on top, and let it sit until frothy (5-10 mins).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Add yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring to flour mixture and mix to form a dough.
  4. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  6. For the filling, mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then blend in softened butter to form a paste.
  7. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle (1/4 inch thick), spread filling evenly over surface.
  8. Roll dough tightly from long side and cut into 12 pieces.
  9. Place rolls in greased baking dish, cover, and let rise 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden.
  11. While baking, prepare frosting: beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, add powdered sugar and vanilla, and mix until creamy.
  12. Spread frosting over warm rolls and serve.

Notes

Let rolls cool slightly before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting too much. For a deeper red color, adjust food coloring as needed.
